From Jersey to Jangus

Hello Folks,

Introducing…drum roll please…Maine Organic Beef Co. For those of you who don’t know us, we’re Sonja, Steve, two kiddos, and about 100 cows. We’re located in central Maine.

In 2022, after many years of milking Jersey cows, we decided it was time for something different. So, we sold our herd of sweet (and kicky) Jerseys, keeping the young females that hadn’t been bred yet.

No more getting up the crack of dawn to plow the driveway for the milk truck!

We bought two handsome red Angus bulls and started breeding our Jersey heifers. For anyone who has been around bulls, these red Angus fellows are calm, cool, and collected compared with the pawing, snorting, head tossing, intimidating Jersey bulls we used to have around.

Fast forward 10 months (a cow gestational period), and we recently welcomed our first Jangus calves. They look similar to Jersey calves but with more muscle mass and these notable pink noses and pink tones around the eyes. Super cute!!!

The calves will spend the next five months or so nursing their moms, learning how to love grass, and getting trained to the single strand of poly wire that makes our rotational grazing program possible.

Throughout 2022, we also purchased about two dozen Jersey/beef calves from a nearby certified organic dairy farm (Because we’re certified organic, we can only purchase certified organic livestock.)

These crossbreeds will combine the best characteristics of dairy and beef cows. Leanness and flavor from the Jersey and tenderness from the Angus.

If all goes as planned, we will have a limited amount of Jangus for your freezers by the end of 2023!

Cowtastically yours,

Sonja
